Enzo Maccarinelli set to retire

13 April 2012

Former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli has confirmed he is to retire from the sport.

The likeable Swansea fighter suffered another hurtful defeat on Saturday when he was stopped on his feet in the third round against Denis Lebedev in Manchester.

That followed a knockout loss by Ola Afolabi in March as he attempted to rebuild following his spectacular knockout by domestic rival David Haye last year.

After such a listless performance against Russian Lebedev, Maccarinelli admitted he was all but certain to retire and confirmed the decision today.

"That's it, there was nothing there on Saturday, that wasn't me," the 28-year-old told thisissouthwales.co.uk.

"Take nothing away from Lebedev, he was a strong fighter, but everyone who has seen me and knows me will recognise that two years ago this kid wouldn't have gone two rounds with me.

"There was just nothing there and I am gutted."
