Farrelly released by Lions

Dennis Wise has released winger Gareth Farrelly after a three-week trial.

Millwall's player-manager took the 28-year-old with him on the club's pre-season tour to Canada but decided to let him go before last night's 2-0 friendly win at Southend.

Assistant Ray Wilkins said: "He is a smashing lad and worked extremely hard but unfortunately Gareth didn't quite offer what we are looking for."

Chairman Theo Paphitis said this week that Millwall would not be investing as much as they had planned in the squad after Tim Cahill's £2million move to Crystal Palace fell through.

But Wise's team, which did not include the Australian, didn't suffer without former Republic of Ireland international Farrelly at Roots Hall last night when Paul Ifill and Jody Morris scored in a fairly comfortable win.

Ifill got the first goal in the second minute of the game after good work from Morris.

Millwall's second goal was scored by the former Chelsea midfielder after David Livermore supplied the shooting opportunity on 65 minutes.
