Andre Villas-Boas believes that Tottenham have become a stronger unit than the team which included Gareth Bale last season.

Speaking after Spurs’ last-gasp victory at the Cardiff City Stadium, Villas-Boas said his defence – who have only conceded one Premier League goal this season – are offered greater protection under the new system.

“Last year with two strikers, we left ourselves exposed a little bit,” he said.

“We have more consistency throughout and play better football. We are able to control the games.”

Paulinho’s stoppage-time winner handed the north Londoner’s their fourth win of the campaign and Villas-Boas spoke of his relief after watching his side create 29 shots on goal.

“It was very satisfying because I don’t see it being very easy for teams to come here and win,” the Spurs boss continued.

“Today there could only be one winner. We played so much football it would have been unfair to come out only with a point. There was a sense of some justice to the result.

“We got rewarded for the number of chances we created. If it wasn’t for David Marshall (Cardiff’s goalkeeper) we could have had a more comfortable win.
