Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker insists criticism makes him 'stronger'

Per Mertesacker insists being criticised makes him "stronger" after playing a key role in Arsenal's FA Cup triumph.

The German has endured an injury-plagued season but started his first game of the campaign in Saturday's showpiece event at Wembley.

Mertesacker's inclusion led to suggestions Arsene Wenger's under-strength defence would be unable to cope with Chelsea's speedy attack.

But the veteran produced a stellar performance to help the Gunners lift the trophy for the 13th time in their history and is adamant being doubted has only served to spur him on.

"I expect myself to perform at that level every single week. The more people that write me off, the stronger I get. That's my feeling," Mertesacker told the Daily Mail.

"I'm just blessed for this opportunity and for the trust from my team-mates and my manager because being sidelined for such a long time, I suffered a lot this season because you want to contribute on the pitch.

"To be able to do that was a very proud moment for myself and to lead the team out for the first time officially as captain is a great moment too.

"Two weeks ago I was on holiday - I didn't expect to play. Everyone trusted me and supported me throughout the season and the manager gave me the opportunity."
