Arsenal fans given just two strikes to choose from in goal of the month competition

It’s pretty slim pickings for Arsenal supporters in the club’s goal of the month contest, with just two strikes to choose from.

Despite Arsene Wenger’s side playing five matches in August an Arsenal player has found the back of the net just twice, and on only one occasion in four Premier League fixtures.

It started so brightly for the Gunners in their first competitive game of the season, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s first-half strike securing Wenger’s first win over Jose Mourinho as Arsenal won the Community Shield.

But it was another 172 minutes before Arsenal found the net again, though Olivier Giroud’s spectacular volley against Crystal Palace was almost worth the wait.

Wenger’s players are currently on an even-longer drought; it is 254 minutes since of competitive action since that Giroud goal – in that time Liverpool held on for a goalless draw at the Emirates and a Fabricio Coloccini own-goal gave Arsenal three points at St James’ Park. Two of Arsenal's three league goals this season have come thanks to opponents turning the ball into their own net.

In spite of his players struggles in front of goal Wenger did not add to his striking options during the final days of the transfer window.

The manager defended his failure to bring in a single outfield player, saying: “The problem at the moment is finding the players that guarantees you are a better team after, and that example last night shows you very well.

“So am I happy with the investment I make? Yes, every time. I bought Sanchez, I bought Ozil, I bought Cech, I bought Gabriel last year."
