Alexis Sanchez’s recovery in time for Sunday’s trip to Stoke looks like going down to the wire with Arsene Wenger confirming he will be “cautious” over his star man’s involvement.

The Chilean forward has been out of action since late November when he picked up a hamstring injury a 1-1 draw away to Norwich.

Having initially been expected to recover for the festive period Sanchez’s return has been delayed on three occasions, with games against Manchester City, Sunderland and Liverpool passing without any comeback for Sanchez.

Wenger has now warned that he has not taken any decision over the 27-year-old’s return, with the coming days crucial to his prospects of participating at the weekend.

“I will be cautious now,” he told reporters when asked about Sanchez’s recovery.

“There is an opportunity that he will be in the squad for Sunday. He will have a definite test on Saturday and Friday and Saturday will be two important days for him.

“It is not impossible that he will be involved.”

Should Sanchez miss the Stoke match he will face the daunting prospect of returning in Arsenal’s home fixture against Chelsea seven days later.
