Granit Xhaka remains optimistic that Manchester City will drop the points needed to let Arsenal and others back into the title race.

Whilst Saturday’s 2-0 home win over Tottenham brought them back in touch with the remainder of the chasing pack – Arsenal are just four points of second placed Manchester United – league leaders City are pulling out of view for the chasing pack.

Pep Guardiola’s side have an eight point lead on Manchester United and are 12 ahead of Arsenal, over whom they exerted their superiority with a fine 3-1 win earlier this month.

City have dropped only two points in their first 12 games of the season but Xhaka insists it’s “conceivable” the leaders could endure a mid-season wobble.

“I think in football everything is possible,” Xhaka told Sky Sports.

“Manchester City, at the moment, are on a very good run, they're doing very well and others have dropped points - which they haven't done - but it's conceivable that they could drop points as well.”

Xhaka added: “They might not continue as they have been.

“But our aim is just to focus on ourselves. We know we need to work and we're convinced that we can compete at the top.

“Everything's possible, I'm a person who thinks realistically but has dreams and fantasies as well. In football, everything is always possible.”

Xhaka’s optimism was not entirely shared by Wenger, who has spent the past fortnight fuming over what he believes was an incorrectly awarded penalty and an offside goal in his side’s 3-1 loss at the Etihad.

“Manchester City are on another planet with results,” Wenger said. “That's why, two weeks ago, I was so angry – because they didn't need that help.”
