Arsenal tightened their grip on a Champions League berth as Danny Welbeck scored the only goal to help Arsene Wenger’s side overcome Norwich and the sense of mutiny among a subsection of fans.

At 12 minutes a smattering of banners expressed the feelings of a minority of Arsenal fans who believed it was “time for change” at Arsenal. A chorus of “only one Arsene Wenger” suggested that the manager may not have lost the fans entirely.

However there was clear evidence it was time for change on the pitch, where Olivier Giroud endured a half to forget that ended with him being booed off the pitch.

Norwich had the best opportunities of the first half, with Nathan Redmon twice forcing Petr Cech to parry viciously hit efforts.

Arsenal’s crisis in front of goal dragged well into the second half, 55 minutes gone and their 70 per cent possession had not even seen them craft a chance.

It was to be the introduction of Welbeck just before the hour that changed the game, the substitute taking advantage of Olivier Giroud’s knockdown to volley Arsenal into the lead four minutes after being introduced.

Another substitute was to aid Arsenal’s cause in defence, Gabriel making several critical interceptions after his introduction for the injured Per Mertesacker on 50 minutes.
