Arsenal have been handed a second major blow in their search for a new transfer guru in as many days after Marc Overmars signed a new contract at Ajax.

Standard Sports understands the Gunners were keen on recruiting Monchi or Overmars as a replacement for former head of recruitment Sven Mislintat, who quit earlier this year after just 14 months.

Monchi confirmed his snubbing of Arsenal at his unveiling at Sevilla on Monday and, mere hours later, Overmars signed a new five-year deal at the Eredivisie outfit.

Standard Sport reported in February that Arsenal feared Overmars would prove difficult to lure from Ajax.

Overmars, who played for Arsenal for three years at the end of the 1990s, said on Monday: "There are still plenty of challenges at Ajax and I'm having a good time here.

"We are taking steps with both the youth academy and the first team. From a sporting point of view, we still want to show a lot.

"What is also important to me, is that it is nice to work with the people around me. I get pleasure and satisfaction from that. "
