Bayern Munich all but guaranteed their place in the last eight of the Champions League on Tuesday night as they beat a spirited Besiktas side 5-0 in a game that turned into a regulation victory for the German giants.

After starting very brightly, Besiktas were dealt a serious blow as centre-back Domagoj Vida was sent off for fouling Robert Lewandowski as the last man after Atiba Hutchinson’s poor pass put the defender in trouble.

Besiktas would not lie down however, creating a number of attacking opportunities: Vagner Love should have done better when he went one-on-one with Sven Ulreich in the Bayern goal, and Ricardo Quaresma created a number of opportunities for himself and his teammates with his dazzling footwork.

The ultimate strength and attacking panache ended up being too much for the visitors however, as they conceded just before half-time as Thomas Muller scored his first of the night.

Second-half goals from Kingsley Coman, Muller, and a Robert Lewandowski brace downed a tired Besiktas side who gave a good account of themselves before tiring due to Bayern’s numerical advantage and quality.
