Standards at Watford have risen so dramatically over recent weeks that Ben Watson was unhappy with his side’s haul of four points over the festive period.

Despite a brutal run of fixtures that took in a trip to Stamford Bridge and home games against Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City Watford gave more than creditable accounts of themselves in each game, none more so than the stunning 3-0 win over Jurgen Klopp’s side.

A 2-2 draw against Chelsea kept Quique Sanchez Flores’ men on an unbeaten run but that ended with back-to-back 2-1 losses at Vicarage Road.

Though there is no shame in losing to two members of the top four the manner of the defeats, both coming through late winners for the visitors, left Watson and the rest of the Watford squad feeling disappointed.

He told the Sun: “We’ve taken four points from four high-profile games either side of Christmas but we believe it should be more.

“For 80 minutes we felt we dominated the [Manchester City] game. We defended well and we had our chances but we switched off from a corner and Aguero scored a great header. That’s what you get from world-class players.

“But we can take so many positives from these last four games against big clubs and they should stand us in good stead for the second half of the season.”

Watford’s league schedule eases somewhat over the coming weeks, with all of their next four games coming against sides below them in the table.
