Burnley escaped potential disqualification from the FA Cup after a BT Sport reporter spotted they had named Erik Pieters in their starting line-up to face Bournemouth without realising the defender was suspended.

Pieters was banned for Tuesday’s fifth-round tie at TurfMoor after picking up yellow cards in the previous two rounds against Fulham and MK Dons.

Burnley were only made aware shortly before kick-off by the BT Sport team that Pieters was suspended and he was replaced in the team by AnthonyDriscoll-Glennon.

“It was a very late change to the Burnley team selection tonight,’ commentator Paul Dempsey said on BT Sport.

“We’re all very indebted to out stats man, Joel Miller, who correctly pointed out that he believed Erik Pieters, named in the original team, was in fact suspended for this game.

“The consequences of that for Burnley could have been very severe. Driscoll-Glennon went onto the team sheet after our reporter, Natalie Quirk, made the enquiry of Burnley.”

Burnley put the mix-up down to “an administrative error”.
