After losing the first leg 3-1 against 10 men, Chelsea seemed on course for the final after goals from Jesper Gronkjaer and Frank Lampard. But the Bridge was stunned when goals from Hugo Ibarra and Fernando Morientes ended the tie.
2005
Chelsea 0 - 1 Liverpool
The defeat that still haunts former boss Jose Mourinho. Luis Garcia’s shot appeared to be cleared off the line by William Gallas, but the “ghost” goal stood and Chelsea crumbled in an intense atmosphere at Anfield.
2007
Chelsea 1 - 1 Liverpool (Liverpool won 4-3 on penalties)
The Blues took a one-goal advantage to Anfield this time and only had themselves to blame for failing to reach the final. They posed no threat to Liverpool after Dirk Kuyt’s goal and lost their nerve when it went to penalties.
2008
Chelsea 4 - 3 Liverpool
Chelsea finally ended their Liverpool jinx, although it went right to the wire. Fortune seemed be on their side this time after a lucky 1-1 draw at Anfield, where John Arne Riise scored an own goal in the last minute. Nerves ran high in the return at Stamford Bridge after Fernando Torres cancelled out Didier Drogba’s goal to send it into extra-time. But Chelsea took control with a cool penalty from Frank Lampard and another Drogba strike. Ryan Babel’s long range effort was too little too late.
2009
Chelsea 1 - 1 Barcelona (Barcelona won on away goal)
The most controversial, painful loss of the lot. After holding Barca to a 0-0 draw in the Nou Camp, Michael Essien’s stunning volley put them ahead. Four penalty appeals were rejected before Andres Iniesta’s injury-time winner.
