Chelsea are considering making another attempt to sign Juventus star Leonardo Bonucci after missing out on Southampton's Virgil Van Dijk.

Chelsea had made the Dutch defender their prime target to strengthen the backline in view of Terry's departure, but he is now expected to join Liverpool for a world record fee for a defender of £60m, plus £200,000-a-week in wages.

The Blues are having to look at other options and Bonucci, who coach Antonio Conte wanted to buy last year, is on the wish-list again.

Bonucci has made it clear in the past that he is happy at Juventus, where he has a contract until 2021.

Another possibility is Roma defender Antonio Rudiger, although he is subject of interest from Inter Milan.

Chelsea are guaranteed to add at least one defender to the squad as highly-rated Denmark international Andreas Christensen is returning from a two-year loan spell at Borussia Monchengladbach.
