Fernando Torres will not be out for as long as first feared after injuring his knee in the opening moments of Tuesday's Champions League game with Steaua Bucharest.

Torres limped out of the European encounter amid concerns the injury would leave him sidelined for a sustained period, but scans carried out on Wednesday have eased initial worry.

“Chelsea Football Club can confirm Fernando Torres suffered a medial collateral ligament injury to his left knee in the Champions League group game at Steaua Bucharest on Tuesday evening,” read a statement on the club’s official website.

“The 29-year-old will be out for approximately three weeks.”

The Blues will be targeting their Premier League match with Manchester City on October 27 as a possible return date for the Spaniard, but Torres will miss Spain's World Cup qualifiers against Belarus and Georgia.
