Chelsea have confirmed that defender David Luiz has put pen to paper on a new contract with the club.

The Brazilian centre-back, who rejoined the Europa League finalists from Paris Saint-Germain in 2016, has signed a fresh two-year deal that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2021.

Luiz had hinted after the tense penalty-shootout victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday evening that the outcome of contract talks between himself and Chelsea would be announced within the next five days. His previous deal was due to expire at the end of the current campaign.

Chelsea - whose appeal against a two-window transfer ban will now go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport - appear to have deviated away from their usual policy of only offering 12-month extensions to players over 30 by giving Luiz an additional two years.

"I am so happy to be here and to have this opportunity to stay. I love this club and I still have the ambition of a young player," he said after confirmation of the new contract was released on Friday evening.

"It means a lot to reach another European final, and we still have the opportunity to finish in the top three of the Premier League this season and I will continue to try to do my best to help the team."

Luiz has made 246 appearances during two spells with Chelsea, including 48 across all competitions this term to help Maurizio Sarri's side secure a top-four finish and qualification for next season's Champions League.

The 32-year-old atoned for his missed penalty in February's League Cup Final defeat to Manchester City against Frankfurt, making no mistake from the spot after producing a crucial goal-line clearance in extra-time.
