Chelsea pair Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah have withdrawn from the England Under-21s squad due to "fitness concerns".

The defensive duo were named in Aidy Boothroyd's 23-man squad for the forthcoming matches against Slovenia on Friday and Austria on Tuesday.

However, James was not part of the group that travelled to Slovenia on Thursday after picking up an injury. That match has since been postponed.

The 19-year-old has only just returned to action for the Blues after suffering an ankle injury while playing in the Under-20 World Cup in June.

But his latest setback means he will not any part during the international break and will therefore miss out on the chance to earn his first U21 cap.

Chalobah, 20, currently out on loan at Huddersfield Town, has also pulled out as a "precaution", his parent club revealed.

Winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, who recently made his comeback from an Achilles tendon injury, will stay with the squad as he looks to build up his match fitness.

The 18-year-old is joined by Chelsea team-mate Marc Guehi, who received his first call-up to the squad after featuring in the Carabao Cup against Grimsby Town.
