Frank Lampard has accepted defeat in his attempts to sign Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu on loan for Derby County for the second half of the season.

Lampard has already brought Mason Mount in on loan from Stamford Bridge, using his close ties with Chelsea, to much success with the midfielder playing all but two league games this season.

However, Lampard has had to look elsewhere for defensive and midfielder reinforcements with Chelsea unwilling to let the versatile Ampadu leave for the remainder of the campaign.

"We have asked, but I don’t think he’s leaving Chelsea," he told reporters.

"He can play in a few positions, that’s why he would be so valuable to anybody and why he’s staying at Chelsea.

"People thought we did a lot of business in the summer, but our actual net spend was very negligible.

"I had to bring in personnel to try to change the style and that’s not a one-window solution, that's probably two or three-window. This window will be quiet for us."
