The father of Tottenham defender Cristian Romero says the club want the defender back “quickly”.

Romero made six starts for Argentina during their World Cup-winning campaign in Qatar and appeared in almost every minute of action from the third group stage game on.

That was despite missing Spurs’ last four Premier League games in the build-up to the tournament, with the 24-year-old having previous when it comes to putting country.

Romero is currently with the rest of the victorious squad in Argentina, where their victory parade through Buenos Aries was cut short due to safety concerns.

“He won’t have much time to enjoy himself. We’ll see how it goes. But they already want him back in England,” Victor Romero told La Voz.

Their passage through Argentina’s capital city was abandoned due to security concerns after a number of fans attempted to jump onto the bus as it passed under a bridge, with footage on social media showing one supporter falling off the back of the vehicle.

The players were taken away by helicopter due to fears over their safety before the bus reached the public square and the Obelisk monument.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are back in action on Boxing Day with a trip to London rivals Brentford.
