Crystal Palace missed the chance to reach the 40-point mark as they were held at home by 10-man Everton.

Palace played most of the second half with a man advantage after James McCarthy was sent off for two yellow cards after 51 minutes.

But Alan Pardew’s side could not find a winner to follow up their win against Norwich with another three points.

Connor Wickham and Emmanuel Adebayor both missed good chances but the result does mean Palace move 11 points clear of the bottom three.

The Eagles now face away games against Arsenal and Manchester United before their FA Cup semi-final with Watford a week on Sunday.

Everton have had their own struggles in recent weeks but the away side had the better of the first half.

Seamus Coleman, Arouna Kone and Romelu Lukaku all went close. Coleman and Lukaku forced good saves from Wayne Hennessey, while Kone fired over.

Palace then created two decent chances of their own before the break. Dwight Gayle attempted a spectacular overhead kick that went just wide before Ramiro Funes Mori almost put the ball into his own net when trying to clear a Wilfried Zaha cross.

It was all-square at half-time, when Connor Wickham came on for Gayle.

Everton almost went ahead early after the break when Ross Barkley smacked the crossbar with a brilliant curling effort from range that had Hennessey beaten.

The Toffees were reduced to 10 men on 51 minutes. McCarthy was already on a yellow card gets and received his second booking for a silly challenge on Yannick Bolasie.

Palace looked to make their man advantage count and Everton goalkeeper Joel Robles was forced to make good saves from Jason Puncheon and Joel Ward.

John Stones had a header saved by Hennessey before Pardew brought on Emmanuel Adebayor with 25 minutes remaining.

Puncheon again forced Robles into action with a brilliant curling effort that was tipped wide. Adebayor then headed wide.

Bakary Sako came on for Bolasie as Palace pushed for a winner.

Wickham looked certain to score late on when Adebayor headed back across goal but he missed his kick and Everton scrambled clear.
