Crystal Palace today smashed their transfer record by agreeing a £7m fee with Wigan for Scotland midfielder James McArthur.

Manager Neil Warnock wants to sign up to four players today and is happy to make a big offer for the 26-year-old.

McArthur was on the verge of joining Leicester last week, only for the Midlands club to withdraw their interest to get Esteban Cambiasso instead.

Championship side Wigan did not want to sell McArthur, who was part of the side that won the FA Cup in 2013, however he wants to play in the Premier League.

Palace’s previous biggest buy was the £4.5m purchase of striker Dwight Gayle from Peterborough last year.

McArthur reported for international duty with Scotland this morning, but no complications over the transfer were expected.
