Wayne Rooney believes England’s victory over Slovenia will prove an invaluable learning experience as manager Roy Hodgson looks to build a side capable of challenging at Euro 2016.

England came from behind and survived a late scare to triumph and Rooney claims the manner of their win will stand them in good stead over the next 12 months as they gear up for with finals in France with qualification virtually assured.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game in a good atmosphere, especially going 1-0 down,” he said. “We showed great character to come back and take the lead. We were disappointed to concede the equaliser but then thankfully got the winning goal and saw the game out.

“It is a positive performance and I think it will be a big performance for a lot of the players in the coming year. The players will certainly benefit from it.”

Rooney also praised the impact of substitute Adam Lallana who played a key role in both of Jack Wilshere’s goals after coming off the bench for Phil Jones - who had suffered a foot injury - at half-time.

“It wasn’t so much a change of shape at half-time but a change of personnel,” said Rooney. “Adam came on and did incredibly for us. It was a great flick for Jack’s second goal. He can take the ball and get in the space and the little pockets. He had a really positive 45 minutes.

“It’s a good end to the season. It was important not to lose the game but we set out to win it and we’ve done that. We can all go and enjoy a few weeks rest now.”
