England's route to the Euro 2016 final: Germany most likely final opponents as Roy Hodgson confirms 23-man squad

Tom Doyle2 June 2016

England's most likely route to Euro 2016 glory will see Roy Hodgson's side battling past Portugal and Spain before taking on Germany in the final, according to leading bookmakers.

Roy Hodgson has high hopes for his side after reaching the European Championships with a perfect qualifying record, but sterner tests await in France this summer.

The odds suggest England will beat Russia and Slovakia - while drawing against Wales - to top Group B and progress to the knockout stages of the competition.

The likely opponents awaiting the Three Lions in the last 16 are Ukraine, before a quarter-final against Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal.

Things get a little trickier in the semis as England are drawn reigning European champions Spain - and it doesn't get easier if England reach the final.

The most likely scenario for England reaching the last two would see a massive clash with world champions Germany - a re-match of the 1966 World Cup, which remains England's only major trophy success.

The Three Lions face one more warm-up game - against Portugal on June 2 - after Hodgson confirmed his 23-man squad for Euro 2016 on Tuesday, with Manchester United newcomer Marcus Rashford making the cut as Leicester title winner Danny Drinkwater missed out.
