England vs Iceland referee: Damir Skomina 'one of the fittest officials at Euro 2016'

Tom Dutton27 June 2016

Damir Skomina will officiate England's Euro 2016 last 16 tie against Iceland on Monday as Roy Hodgson's men target a place in the quarter-finals.

Fans of the Three Lions will take a keen interest in the team of officials for the knockout clash after exiting major tournaments in controversial circumstances twice in the last five attempts.

Indeed, Swiss referee Urs Meier ruled out Sol Campbell's extra-time effort at Euro 2004 - a game England lost on penalties - before Frank Lampard was denied a clear goal against Germany by official Jorge Larrionda as Fabio Capello's side crashed out of the 2010 World Cup.

But Howard Webb believes Slovenian Skomina is well-suited to the Nice clash and expects the game to pass without major controversy.

Howard Webb wrote in The Times: "He's in great physical shape - probably one of the fittest of the referees at the tournament.

"Uefa obviously rates him too as it put him in charge of City's Champions League semi-final clash with Real Madrid.

"That was a second leg, which is always tougher and in an imposing atmosphere at the Bernabeu but he did well apart from missing a bad foul on Raheem Sterling by Lucas Vazquez, which could have been a red card."

Webb added: "The 39-year-old should not get any trouble from the England players who are always on best behaviour in international matches.

"This match is very well suited to a young referee."
