England booked their place in the last 16 of Euro 2016 but must be content with second place in Group B after playing out a goalless draw with Slovakia in Saint-Etienne.

Roy Hodgson's side came into the game knowing that a win over Slovakia would see them top Group B and, after a good start from their opposition, it was England who began to control proceedings and indeed have the better of the chances.

Jamie Vardy, making his first start in the competition following his goal against Wales, forced Matus Kozacik into a fine save early on after outrunning Liverpool's Martin Skrtel and firing a powerful shot at goal.

Nathaniel Clyne, who was excellent on the right wing, then set up Adam Lallana but the Liverpool midfielder's effort flew straight into Kozacik's hands.

Slovakia came back out after the break more dangerous than they had ended the first, but it was Clyne who threatened to score when he latched onto Sturridge's ball and fired a fine effort which hit Kozacik's arm and went out.

Wayne Rooney replaced Jack Wilshere with Dele Alli coming on for Lallana and it was the Tottenham man who forced Slovakia's defence into a goal-line clearance seconds after his substitution.

However, Hodgson's changes could not inspire England to a win and the Three Lions finished behind Wales in Group B although they did manage to qualify for the knockout stages of Euro 2016 in the process.
