Poland vs Portugal as it happened: Cristiano Ronaldo scores in penalty shootout as Portugal reach Euro 2016 semi-finals

Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed added incentive ahead of Portugal's quarter-final clash with Poland following Lionel Messi's decision to retire from international football.

The Real Madrid forward will know adding a major piece of international silverware his trophy cabinet could tip the ongoing battle to be crowned the world's best in his favour.

But Portugal are not all about Ronaldo's flamboyance. A gritty display against Croatia helped them get this far and they have had to grind out results, rather than sweep opponents aside, to progress.

However, Poland represent a stern test at Stade Velodrome, and have a game changer of their own in Robert Lewandowski.

What they're saying

Poland coach Adam Nawalka: "We don't have a single problem with the fact that Robert Lewandowski hasn't scored so far.

"He's doing a great job for our side. We are a team that understands each other very well and knows that what's good for the team is the most important thing."

Portugal coach Fernando Santos: “Sometimes you have to be pragmatic. It’d be nice to play pretty but that’s not always how you win tournaments.

“We were up against an amazing team [Croatia] and this was always going to be tight and strong.

“It was a very tactical match. At times we could have passed the ball faster but Croatia influenced that."

30 mins: A shove on Ronaldo there? Surely there was. A cross from out on the left and Pazdan wipes the Portugal forward out inside the box.

Ronaldo pleads for a penalty, nothing doing though.

28 mins: Ronaldo does finally find some space for a shot from a fair way outside the area. It's low but lacks much in the way of venom, Fabianski is well behind it.

26 mins: Portugal can't even get the ball to Ronaldo when they go wide, that formidable pairing of Pazdan and Glick are not letting any cross pass them. And if a Portuguese player does fancy a long shot... Well look above.

As for Portugal, William Carvalho, Quaresma and - of course - Pepe will have to watch their step. Some big calls for German referee Felix Brych to make tonight, no doubt.

For Poland: Grosicki, Maczynski, Peszko, Piszczek, Pazdan, Jedrzejczyk.

A reminder now then of the players who could miss the semi-finals if they're booked tonight...
