Thomas Vermaelen has suffered an injury setback just 48 hours after joining Barcelona from Arsenal.

The Spanish club revealed that the Belgium defender, who joined for £15million after finding himself surplus to requirements, is still struggling with a hamstring injury they say he has been carrying since the World Cup.

Vermaelen will continue to have treatment but, with kick-off in La Liga less than two weeks away, the 28-year-old is struggling to be ready. He must have further treatment before coach Luis Enrique can even consider bringing him back into full training with the rest of the first-team squad.
