Fulham are hopeful defender Matt Targett will recover from his ankle injury in time to face Birmingham on Sunday.

Targett limped off during last Friday’s 2-1 win over Sunderland but he is expected to be fit for the final game of the regular season and his availability would be a boost for Fulham as they look to overhaul Cardiff in the race for automatic promotion to the Premier League.

Ryan Sessegnon moved into the left-back berth after Targett went off against Sunderland, but Fulham manager Slavisa Jokanovic will want to see the Championship Player of the Year further forward against Birmingham.

Targett has formed a strong partnership with Sessegnon on Fulham’s left side since he moved on loan from Southampton in January.

Cardiff, however, have been dealt a blow ahead of the final day after influential Iceland midfielder Aron Gunnarsson was ruled of their game against Reading after undergoing knee surgery.
