Gary Lineker today claimed the majority of the Football Association commission members are “utterly pointless” and not up to the task of reviving the England team.

Greg Dyke launched the task force in a keynote speech last month in which he described the English game as “a tanker which needs turning”. The new FA chairman also used the address to set England the target of winning the 2022 World Cup.

Dyke will sit on the think tank with former England manager Glenn Hoddle, Football League chairman Greg Clarke, FA vice-chairman Roger Burden, League Managers’ Association chairman Howard Wilkinson, Professional Football Association chairman Ritchie Humphreys, Crewe director of football Dario Gradi and former England defender Danny Mills.

Former England striker Lineker believes the line-up is a missed opportunity and tweeted: “No wonder they announced Glenn Hoddle early on. Most of the others are utterly pointless. Expected better from Greg Dyke.”

In response to a tweet which said: “Hoped it was going to be a national football study, not bureaucrats reviewing the bureaucracy”, Lineker replied: “Exactly!”

Someone then messaged the Match of the Day presenter to accuse him of jealousy but Lineker tweeted: “No, It’s not for me, but Waddle, Hall, Barnes, Neville etc? I could name 50 more apt.”

After England’s qualifier against Ukraine last month Lineker went on Twitter to condemn the team’s inability to retain possession.
