Granit Xhaka a doubt for Arsenal’s huge Premier League trip to Manchester City

Swiss star still struggling with illness

Granit Xhaka remains a doubt for Arsenal’s huge trip to Manchester City on Wednesday.

The Gunners head to the Premier League champions needing to win to remain in command of the Premier League title race after a run of three consecutive draws.

Mikel Arteta has told his squad they must emerge from the Etihad Stadium with all three points in what look like a mouth-watering affair at the top of the division.

Arsenal’s preparation, however, has hardly been ideal.

William Saliba is still not ready to return from the back injury to have ruled him out of the last five weeks of action.

Now, Xhaka looks doubtful to make the journey to Manchester too.

The Swiss international missed Friday night’s costly draw with Southampton through illness and Arteta has confirmed he is still a doubt.

“Xhaka is hopefully able to train today, still a doubt,” said the Gunners boss at Tuesday’s pre-match press conference.

“The rest are ok.”

Fabio Vieira replaced the 30-year-old for the draw with Saints and struggled to impose himself. Jorginho is another option to play alongside Thomas Partey should Xhaka not be deemed fit enough.
