English football commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster with delayed kick offs and a minute’s silence.

Matches all across the country were delayed by seven minutes as a mark of respect for the 96 Liverpool fans who died on 15 April 1989.

While all of this weekend’s matches will hold a minute’s silence before kick-off, 96 seats were left empty at Wembley and each draped with a Liverpool scarf to remember the victims.

The tributes were impeccably observed at everywhere but the Stadium of Light, where isolated shouts were followed by boos.

An inquest into the disastrous events of 15 April 1989 was re-opened in Warrington on 31 March.

The match, an FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forrest at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough stadium, was ended at 15:06.

Further tributes will be paid tomorrow at Anfield when Liverpool host Manchester City on what is sure to be an emotional day for Reds fans.

The club have planned mosaics in the stands during the minute's silence and there will be floral wreaths presented by City and Celtic representatives, as well as a commemorative patch on the Reds' kit for Sunday's game and all their remaining home matches this season.
