Jamie Carragher tweeted his thanks to disgraced Australian cricket captain and coach Steve Smith and Darren Lehmann for deflecting the spotlight, only to delete his post following criticism.

The former Liverpool and England defender was suspended from his punditry role at Sky Sports after a video of him spitting from his car at a 14-year-old girl went viral.

The 40-year-old offered a number of apologies, including an interview live on Sky News in which he admitted it had “That devastated me more than anything else”, and his since been largely out of the spotlight.

However, following the Australian ball-tampering scandal, following which Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft have all been handed lengthy bans and head coach Lehmann has announced his resignation following the fourth and final test against South Africa.

Following tearful press conferences from both Smith and Lehmann, Carragher tweeted: ‘I knew you’d save me boys!’, before deleting the post following criticism that he’d made light of his incident.
