John Terry is one the world's greatest defenders, says Antonio Conte

Antonio Conte has hailed John Terry as one of the world's best defenders and admitted the Chelsea captain's final game was an emotional occasion.

Terry played his last game as a Chelsea player on Sunday in the 5-1 thrashing of Sunderland at Stamford Bridge following a 22-year tenure at the west London club.

The 36-year-old started the match, but was brought off in the 26th minute - corresponding with his shirt number.

The Chelsea players gave the long-serving Chelsea captain a guard of honour as he exited the pitch, and Conte revealed after the game the decision to substitute Terry in the first half was a joint decision made between himself and the centre-back.

"[There was ] a lot of emotion, it was very positive for us," Conte said on Sunday. "We overcame a difficult step but now we must celebrate with our fans.

"For sure now we have another chance to celebrate this season with the FA Cup final. But it'll be very tough.

When asked specifically about Terry coming off in the 26th minute, Conte replied: "I told you that for sure it was very important to find the right solution to celebrate a great champion and legend for this club.

"He deserved to start this game. For the substitution, he deserved this celebration because he's in Chelsea's history.

"I wish for him and his family the best. It'll be a great loss because he did a lot this season on and off the pitch.

"Now we must be respectful for his decision. He is one of the best defenders in the world. He deserved this [guard of honour]."
