Chelsea legend John Terry has revealed he was "humbled" by the reception he received from the club's supporters on his return to Stamford Bridge.

The former Blues captain was making his first appearance at the club since leaving in the summer of 2017, having made 717 appearances and scored 67 goals in his .

Terry was in the opposite dugout to face and former team-mate Frank Lampard, now Chelsea manager, as part of Aston Villa's coaching team with the two sides meeting on Wednesday night.

The 38-year-old made a discreet entrance onto the pitch from the tunnel but, after having his name sung by the Chelsea fans consistently throughout the game, Terry walked back out and applauded them at the final whistle.

Asked how it was to be in the opposite dugout, he said to Chelsea TV: "Really strange. Obviously being back the first time since I stopped playing, I got a great reception from the supporters and it's a difficult one because we lost the game so you don't want to go [back] out.

"But I needed to show my appreciation and the fans did that at the end of the game as well which was amazing for me.

"I'm really humbled to come back and get that reception, and a big thank you to the supporters who sung my name."

Having seen the likes of Mount and Abraham come through the academy during his time at the club, Terry says he is excited by the new crop of youngsters coming through at Chelsea.

"What Lamps was saying earlier in the season, it's great to see so many young players coming through," he added.

"Since myself, there haven't been too many who have done that - Ruben's been a bit in and out - but to see so many younger players, I think that's appreciated by the fans as well.

"Lamps and [assistant coach] Jody [Morris] have shown that if they're good enough they'll get their opportunity."
