Kieran Trippier was on Monday awaiting the results of a scan on the ankle injury he sustained in Tottenham’s pre-season friendly against Juventus.

The 26-year-old is the only specialist right-back trusted by manager Mauricio Pochettino and the damage is a concern for Spurs, with their opening Premier League fixture at Newcastle just six days away.

Trippier wore a protective boot over the weekend and, as is normal in these cases, Tottenham wanted to wait for the swelling on the ankle to subside before investigating the problem.

The England international s Pochettino’s first choice following Kyle Walker’s £50million move to Manchester City earlier in the summer.

After the 2-0 win over Juventus at Wembley, Pochettino said Academy product Kyle Walker-Peters was not yet ready to play regular first-team football.

Trippier was said to be relatively optimistic about the diagnosis but if he is not ready to play at Newcastle, Eric Dier would be favourite to take his role – if Pochettino uses a back four.

Pochettino remains keen to sign a new right-back before the transfer window closes on August 31, to provide proper competition for Trippier, who agreed a new five-year deal last month.
