Lee Bowyer has ended speculation over his future by agreeing a new contract at Charlton Athletic.

The Addicks announced on Wednesday that their highly-rated boss had put pen to paper on a fresh three-year deal that will keep him at The Valley until the summer of 2023.

New Charlton owners East Street Investments (ESI) were keen to reach an agreement with Bowyer after completing their takeover of the club from Roland Duchatelet earlier this month.

It initially seemed as if they would wait until after the conclusion of the January transfer window to negotiate, only for talks to be brought forward.

"I'm delighted," Bowyer said. "It's something I've been looking forward to getting done and it's been a long while coming. The most important thing now is that the club can start building and moving forward.

"This is a good club with great tradition. We have great fans, I have great staff around me and I've got players that give me everything, so everything to do with this club is positive.

"Now the new owners have come in and we're going to have some funds. It's all a manager wants - good people around you who want to win and go forwards."

Former Charlton midfielder Bowyer initially took caretaker charge in March 2018 following the sacking of Karl Robinson and led the club to the League One play-offs before being appointed as permanent manager later that year.

He then guided Charlton to promotion last season following a play-off final victory over Sunderland at Wembley, but looked to have departed in June 2019 before finally agreeing a one-year contract extension.

Charlton began their latest Championship campaign in positive fashion, but currently sit 19th and just five points above the relegation zone after a dire run of only one win in their last 16 matches.
