Manchester City can take off next season if they bring in some flyers, writes Danny Murphy

I have doubts about whether there are enough hungry players in this Manchester City squad.

Yaya Toure, David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany have been there a long time and in some ways that is good, because they are a solid core of top-class performers.

But there is another side to it. When players have been there for as long as that, and been successful, things can become a bit stale, a bit samey.

When I watch players at other clubs, like Dele Alli or Marcus Rashford or Victor Moses, you can tell how much they want to be successful.

They have youth and desire — and I am not sure there is enough of that at City.

They need more athleticism in the team, more tenacity. They need more flying machines like Leroy Sane or Gabriel Jesus, who are determined to make something happen whenever they receive the ball.

Aguero is a wonderful player but I wonder whether he has done all he can at City. Perhaps he needs a fresh challenge. Perhaps the best way for City to start next season would be to have a front three of Sane, Jesus and Raheem Sterling.

Pep Guardiola’s first season has been an education for him. He has made some strange decisions — such as playing a high defensive line at Leicester in December, when City were undone by Jamie Vardy’s pace and lost 4-2.

He is a perfectionist and you can sense his frustration that some at City are not as good as players at Barcelona or Bayern Munich, where Guardiola coached some of the world’s best.

He can win the League at City but it depends on who he can bring in and who he can move on.

That is why City will be the most interesting club to watch in the transfer market this summer.
