Louis van Gaal is planning another busy summer in the transfer market.

The Manchester United manager has already spent nearly £150million bringing in Angel di Maria, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind but is expected to splash out again at the end of the season.

Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and Atletico Madrid’s Diego Godin are top targets with the Dutchman identifying central defence as an area for concern.

Marco Reus, Dani Alves and Southampton full-back Nathaniel Clyne are also believed to be under consideration as Van Gaal bids to restore United to former glories.

Speaking to shareholders back in October, chief executive Ed Woodward played down reports that United would enter the transfer market in January.

“We’re not looking to enter the market for short-term fixes,” said Woodward.

“However, we have targets that we are looking at for next summer and should any of those become available in January, which is rare, we will consider acting.

“But in terms of expectations we all need to recognise that’s a low probability.”
