Robin van Persie has been ruled out of the Manchester derby after failing to return to match fitness in time for Sunday's top-four clash.

Louis van Gaal confirmed the Dutch striker would miss United's game against Manchester City in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

Van Gaal's comments come despite Van Persie declaring himself fit to feature against Manuel Pellegrini's men. The 31-year-old took to Twitter on Thursday to tell supporters he was back in training and able to play.

The Reds host City as they bid to extend their one-point league advantage over Manuel Pellegrini's men.
