Asmir Begovic won't join Chelsea, according to his former manager Harry Redknapp.

Jose Mourinho wants to sign the Stoke goalkeeper as cover following Petr Cech's departure to Arsenal on Monday.

But Redknapp, who managed Begovic while he was in charge at Portsmouth for three years from 2005, believes the 28-year-old is good enough to start for a top-six team and shouldn't settle for a place on the bench at Stamford Bridge.

The former Tottenham boss tried to bring Begovic to White Hart Lane during his Spurs tenure and believes the Bosnia international is good enough to replace David de Gea.

"I cannot see Asmir Begovic going to Chelsea. He’s too good a keeper to be a number two and if he goes to Stamford Bridge then he’ll only be Thibaut Courtois’ replacement.

"He’s a great pro and definitely a top six team keeper and if, as looks likely, De Gea goes to Real Madrid then I think Manchester United should look at him, he’s that good."
