Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal is a huge admirer of Mats Hummels - and his failure to sign the Borussia Dortmund defender last summer was surprising, according to former Chelsea and AC Milan star Ruud Gullit.

The Dutch boss's decision not to strengthen his inexperienced defence with the Germany centre back puzzled Gullit.

The former Netherlands international told Goal.com: "It is a surprise that Van Gaal didn't buy any good central defenders - that had to be his priority.

"He was crazy about Hummels and wanted to buy him. So I would have bought Man United some good defenders because that was the weakest link. For me, that they did not was a surprise. Nevertheless, he gets results. The more results he gets, the more confidence they get and the better they will play."

Van Gaal's team lost to Swansea on Saturday with defenders Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Luke Shaw all criticised for their part in a poor display at the back.

United are expected to renew their interest in the 26 year-old defender this summer.
