Manchester United defender Luke Shaw suffered a double fracture of the right leg in Tuesday's Champions League match at PSV Eindhoven, the club have confirmed.
The England international will be transferred to Manchester on Wednesday to be operated on.
Shaw was involved in a collision with Hector Monero in the PSV box which was deemed fair by the match official and play proceeded until it became apparent the defender had suffered a serious injury.
There was a 10-minute delay as medical staff saw to the 20-year-old before he was stretchered off the field wearing an oxygen mask.
Shaw, who looks unlikely to play again this season and is a serious doubt for next summer's European championships, later posted a message on social media vowing to come back stronger, while telling his followers 'words can't descirbe hgow gutted I am'.
United confirmed the left-back's injury was incredibly serious after the match.
A United spokesperson told reporters: "Luke Shaw has suffered a double fracture of the leg."
