Malaga have agreed to let Manuel Pellegrini join Manchester City with reports today saying the Chilean has signed a two‑year deal.
The Malaga coach said this week he would not discuss his future until the end of the season, even though he has been the favourite to succeed the sacked Roberto Mancini.
However, the path has been cleared for Pellegrini (right) to move after City agreed to pay the £3.3million release clause in his contract.
City needed to move quickly with Barcelona also looking at Pellegrini, given that there are doubts over whether Tito Vilanova, who has undergone treatment for cancer, will continue as coach at the Nou Camp.
Last night, City beat Reading 2-0 to secure runners-up spot in the Premier League.
Brian Kidd, who has taken charge for the last week of the season following Mancini’s sacking on Monday night, says the deposed champions deserved to take second spot.
Kidd said: “What has gone on in the last 24 hours was a shock to the staff, and before the game I would have just taken the result, to get the three points and take second place.
“I am pleased for them because it would have been a travesty if we hadn’t finished second.
“When you get to this stage of the season it’s not about performances but getting results.”
Assistant manager David Platt, who was offered the chance to stay on, has decided to leave the club.
Failure to retain the title and a second consecutive failure in the Champions League pushed Mancini towards the exit door, with Saturday’s surprise FA Cup Final defeat to Wigan proving the final straw.
