Just when Liverpool fans thought things couldn’t get any worse for the misfiring Mario Balotelli, they did. Spectacularly so.

The Italian had not put in his worst performance since joining the Reds this summer but he was hauled off by manager Brendan Rodgers at half-time of tonight’s 3-0 defeat at home to Real Madrid after swapping shirts with Pepe as the players walked down the tunnel.

The controversial forward has undoubtedly disappointed so far this season since joining from AC Milan in August, and has just scored just once in his first nine games for the Anfield side.

It is of course far too early to write off the maverick striker but Rodgers would be forgiven for wondering whether he would have been better off signing Loic Remy from QPR instead.

Liverpool were linked with the forward before he joined Chelsea at the close of the transfer window and for a fee of £8.5million, the Frenchman would have cost just over half of Balotelli’s transfer fee.

Remy has had his opportunities limited at Stamford Bridge so far this campaign but he scored a clinical opener for Chelsea last night against Maribor and you can vote in our poll below on whether Liverpool would have been better off signing the France international instead of Balotelli this summer.

So what do you think? Have your say in the poll below...
