New Tottenham stadium: Spurs will lack identity until they are in new ground, fears Dimitar Berbatov

Waiting game: It is unclear when Tottenham will move into their new home

Former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov says the club will not have a real identity until they move into their new home.

Spurs’ game against Fulham at Wembley Stadium on Saturday was intended to be their last 'home fixture' before moving into their new ground back at White Hart Lane.

However, following what the club cited as issues with ‘critical safety systems’, they were forced to announce that at least another two Premier League games - against Liverpool and Cardiff - will have to be played at the national stadium, as well as domestic cup and European fixtures, yet to be confirmed.

While they spent a season under the arch last term, Berbatov, who made over 100 appearances for Tottenham, says there is nothing quite like playing at 'home'.

New Tottenham stadium opening date delayed

“The news this week isn't good for my old team,” Berbatov admitted.

“It's important for any team to feel at home, have an identity.

“When you play at your own home, it feels different, and as a player it can really push you on.”

Speaking to Betfair, he added: “A couple more matches at Wembley won't be too much of an issue as the players are used to playing there now and had a good record last season, but the quicker they can get into the new stadium the better.”
