Patrice Evra says the negotiations over his move to West Ham were the fastest thing he’d done in his life, and that he feels lucky to be at the club.

The 36-year-old joined the Hammers on a free transfer on Wednesday, having not played competitive football since October having been released by Marseille after kicking a fan at a Europa League game.

Evra, who made over 40 appearances under David Moyes for Manchester United, will come in to bolster an injury plagued squad as they look to battle against relegation.

Of the two current left-back options, Aaron Cresswell has been more often deployed on the left of a back three while Arthur Masuaku, more suited to a role further forward, is suspended for spitting at Wigan’s Nick Powell.

Evra described the decision as ‘easy’ and said without money restricting things, the deal could’ve been completed in five minutes.

“It happened really fast. My agent called me and told me I needed to come back [from Dubai] to London as quick as I could and I had a nice meeting with the manager, who I know from Manchester United, of course, and I met the Chairman, so it was really easy.

“When you have to make a deal and money is not the issue, the deal could be done in five minutes,” Evra told the club’s website.

“The main thing was for me to join West Ham and to help my teammates to win as many games as we can.

“It was the fastest thing I have done in my life, because both parties wanted to work together, so it was very easy to make an agreement.

“I’m just happy to be here, it’s really simple. You don’t realise how lucky you are and just to wake up this morning and know I am going to train with my new teammates made me smile.”
