Petr Cech praises 'alert and patient' Arsenal as Gunners close in on Champions League

Petr Cech said Arsenal had to be patient to find a route past relegation-threatened Norwich at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Much of the pre-match build-up was overshadowed by talk of supporter protests against manager Arsene Wenger after another trophyless campaign at Emirates Stadium.

A handful of fans were seen throwing their support behind the 'time for change' demonstarations ahead of kick-off, but a divide in the fanbase was apparent as a chorus of 'there's only one Arsene Wenger' drowned out boos for the Frenchman.

Despite failing to challenge for the Premier league crown and slipping up against Watford in their FA Cup defence, the Gunners moved a step closer to a 19th straight year in the Champions League.

Substitute Danny Welbeck converted Olivier Giroud's knock-down to move Arsenal eight-points clear of fifth-placed West Ham and Cech praised the home side's persistence after the game.

"It was a very difficult game for us because they have been absolutely brilliant for a long period of time. They defended very well and very compact," he told the club's website.

"When they had the ball they were dangerous on the counter attacks. We had to be alert and we had to be patient."
