Eden Hazard's superb individual form was a key factor in Chelsea's title triumph last season, but the Belgian's performances have been far less impressive this term.
The 24-year-old is yet to open his account in the Premier League and Jose Mourinho's side are languishing in 16th place in the table, having won just three of their opening 12 games.
Hazard was the league's leading light just seven months ago but has struggled to reproduce the displays that saw him crowned PFA Player of the Year in April.
Once Hazard won the prestigious award Mourinho tipped the Belgium international to go on to become as good as Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, but it could now be the Portuguese forward's talent that the Blues' team will be built around.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is reportedly keen to launch a £70m bid to sign Real Madrid's Ronaldo and is willing to let not only Hazard but also Oscar and Nemanja Matic leave west London in order to get his man.
Ronaldo may now be 30 years of age and past his peak in the traditional sense of the phrase, yet he is still very much at the pinnacle of his profession.
