As Christmas schedules go, manager Harry Redknapp must be looking at his fixtures with a sense of optimism.

A trip to Arsenal is unlikely to be rewarding, however, they can go to Emirates Stadium with little to lose. But home games against Palace and Swansea provide a chance to move further away from the bottom of the table.

Most of the strain will be on top-scorer Austin’s shoulders to get the goals. Austin (left) performs best alongside Bobby Zamora, yet his hip problems will reduce his involvement.

It’s at the back, in particular, where Redknapp may have to rotate. Inspirational Richard Dunne is 35 and will struggle to play three matches in such a short time. Squad players like Clint Hill and Nedum Onuoha can help fill the void and maybe Rio Ferdinand will get a rare run-out.

Boxing Day: Arsenal (a)

Sunday: Crystal Palace (h)

New Year’s Day: Swansea (h)
