Liverpool have begun their summer business early, securing three signings in the first weeks of June, but it seems unlikely they will stop there.
With the £117 million spent last summer having brought in just two players (Emre Can and Lazar Markovic) who have been significant successes owners FSG are likely to be wary of splashing big money on players without proven Champions League experience or a track record of Premier League success, something Dejan Lovren and Javi Manquillo.
In that context James Milner seems to be exactly the sort of player the club are after, an experienced presence who will help fill the Steven Gerrard-shaped void in the current side. Danny Ings also seems a gamble worth taking, with Burnley likely to get less than £10 million for a player who scored 11 goals.
Having secured squad players Brendan Rodgers will likely chase the replacement for Luis Suarez he could not find last season. But quality strikers are in high demand and if Liverpool are to secure Edinson Cavani or Radamel Falcao they will have to hold off competition from Manchester United and Chelsea.
Of course overshadowing all of the incoming signings at Anfield will be the increasingly likely departure of Raheem Sterling. Liverpool will hopefully learn from their experience with Suarez just how difficult it can be to replace a star player.
